Home Mayor Letters

Fellow Residents,

As you are all aware the weather conditions this year are of unprecedented proportions.  We are not only seeing snowstorms that are leaving record amounts of snow, and continue at a relentless pace.  The Village crew and our residents are being tested to our limits and beyond.

If we are going to survive these conditions we have to work together to address the priorities in order to provide safe passable streets and sidewalks through out the Village.

1st Priority:  The Village crew has to plow, salt and sand our roads so they are safely passable.  Property owners whose property abuts sidewalks have to clear them within 24 hours of a snow event.  If there is a fire hydrant adjacent to your home, it too must be cleared.

2nd Priority:  The Village crew has to be able to get back out to widen the streets. This will cause snow to be pushed back along our driveways and residents are responsible to clear it again.

3rd Priority:  The Village crew has to clear storm drains so when the snow starts to melt or there is a sleet/rain event, the water can flow into the storm drains.

4th Priority:  The current weather conditions are not only prohibiting the snow from melting, but the amount of snow displaced by our plow is actually growing.  The Village is looking into snow melting equipment used by the Town of North Hempstead and to possibly join forces with them and our adjacent villages in removing the snow.

In order to accomplish these tasks, the Village may require that cars not park on the streets.  It is also important that everyone exercise both common sense and courtesy to our fellow residents.  If you need to park on the street, at the very least, park on the same side of the street as cars already parked.  If possible, cars should always park in driveways.

Finally, the Village is taking steps to create snow emergency and evacuation routes on our primary roads.  This would prohibit parking of any nature on our major roadways during snow emergencies.  During these next few difficult months, please try and assist your elderly neighbors.  You may contact your local house of worship, local Boys Scout Troop, or our schools for volunteers who can assist you or at least direct you to someone who can help.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation.
